St Mary In the Elms in Woodhouse

An image of the church c. 1890.

The church at Woodhouse was originally dedicated to St Michael the Archangel. It was built by Henry Beaumont, Earl Buchan, in 1338. It had a square tower and an embattled parapet with pinnacles. About a century after it was built, it was repaired and glazed. Further repairs were carried out over the years and in 1844, it was repaired and the upper part of the tower was rebuilt at a cost of £200 given by Mrs Hiley. The church had four bells. Further restoration was carried out by William Herrick Esq. in 1859 at a cost of £600. In 1875, six bells were cast at Taylor’s Bell Foundry in Loughborough. Two years later, in 1877, the church was rededicated to St. Mary in the Elms.
